Small businesses are often unaware of how their business is threatened by the lack of their disaster management plan. In addition to high costs they pay for their IT, potential loss of data or business disruption due to an occasional downtime there can also be drastic consequences to this lack, e.g. severe loss of income. 

Very often SMEs do not have any disaster management measures to retrieve data in case of technological or natural disasters. The main reason for this lies in the lack of financial resources, knowledge and time.

Respective data protection can be very expensive

But can SMEs even afford to experience a flood, a fire, an equipment theft or failure? It is estimated that the loss of one piece of data can cost a company as much as 10,000 Euros. Therefore, the total cost of the loss of large amount of data may be tremendous.
Even when SMEs ensure the protection of data, their backup copies are usually not well protected and very often backups are located in the same location as original servers.

Cloud computing is not well established in SMEs

While the benefits of cloud computing are well known to large companies, there are many smaller businesses who are not well acquainted with the technology yet.
A recent British survey among SMEs revealed that almost two-thirds of them do not use cloud computing. The fact which is even more alarming is that almost half of them do not even know what this term means!
